BALLYHOO

Are we buying the fuss or the fabrics?

What makes some brands so desirable that we proudly wear their names? Why are we waiting in line to wrap ourselves in logo wear? What makes us enter data grabbing rigged raffles to win the possibility to purchase the latest drop? Buzz. Hype. Hoopla. Puff and propaganda. It’s all ballyhoo. But what is it? And what is it worth? Ballyhoo is a t-shirt concept that explores our relationship with brands, hype and value.

Why do we buy the hype? Is it the advertising? The catwalks? Is it our insecurities? Or are we ‘just doing it’ because of the values written in brand manifestos? Maybe logos are simply cotton embroidered statements of success? A way to show the world just how deep your Prada pockets are. Swooshes and box logos worn like badges of honour. The exclusivity of limited editions with included bragging rights. Maybe it’s a bit of it all?

The Ballyhoo t-shirts are priced from $0.99 to $1,000,000.00 with 100 editions of each price label. All purchases come with a certificate of authenticity.

The price range reflects prices from unbranded mass-produced bargains to super hyped resells and out of this world extravagant luxury most people will never be able to afford.

The Ballyhoo concept lives in flux between hype and price, desire and reason. All the t-shirts are limited editions made from the same high quality organic cotton. The only difference is the price label box logo showing the world what you paid. Price tags are the first thing we remove after purchasing an item but its codes, signals and values remain in logo, design and exclusivity of the product that we share with the world. This is what Ballyhoo is seeking to make make more transparent. Remove the bull, simply by printing the price directly on the t-shirt.
